Correcting LEM Regarding the AP2544-02 SIMM

Just a quick post to help anyone googing the part number and correct some misinformation.

At the bottom of LEM’s page for the Power Macintosh 6100 and on their page for the Power Macintosh 7100, LEM state “Beware bogus 256K cache module AP2544-02 – it doesn’t do anything on the 6100 or 7100”. OK, but there is a very simple reason that the AP2544-02 doesn’t work in your Power Mac 6100 or 7100 (8100 or 9150 either). That SIMM is the Cache + ROM card from a Performa 6200, and possibly also the Performa 6300 and related machines. Don’t put two ROMs in your computer, it probably wont like it very much. In fact, I’d go so far as to say, don’t shove random cards that you don’t know what they are into your computer!

As a side note, the AP2544-02 looks to be extremely interesting. It isn’t just a regular Cache + ROM… it looks like it has Flash ROM, meaning it can potentially be reprogrammed using the Flash ROM utility from Apple… although I’d be pretty careful doing this as it is a very good way to brick your computer.
